WHAT IS CHARACTERIZATION?
- WHAT ARE THE TYPES OF CHARACTERIZATION?
- Direct Characterization tells the audience what the personality of the character is.
Example: “The patient boy and quiet girl were both well mannered and did not disobey their mother.”
Explanation: The author is directly telling the audience the personality of these two children. The boy is “patient” and the girl is “quiet.” - Indirect Characterization shows things that reveal the personality of a character. There are five different methods of indirect characterization:
- Speech: What does the character say? How does the character speak?
- Thoughts: What is revealed through the character’s private thoughts and feelings?
- Effect on others: How do other characters feel or behave in reaction to the character?
- Actions: What does the character do? How does the character behave?
- Looks: What does the character look like? How does the character dress?

Flat character: A character who is stereotypical and lacks interest.
EX: ( Jeanne Forestier in the Necklace)
Round character: A character who is presented in greater depth, interest, and detail.
EX: (Bertha in bliss)
Static character: A character who does not undergo any change throughout the courses of the story
Ex: (Mathild’s husband).
Dynamic character: A character who undergoes some sort of transformation throughout the courses of the story
Ex: (Gruv, in the lady with the pet dog)
Protagonist: is a central character in a literary work.
EX: ( bertha in bliss )
An antagonist: is a character, who is opposite to, or challenges, the protagonist.
Ex: (the skipper’s wife in the blue stones)
Anti-hero : is a character who lacks the heroic qualities
Ex: (eddie in bliss )
