Chomsky's Principles and Parameters

Noam Chomsky's theory of Principles and Parameters is a framework for understanding the nature of human language and how it is acquired. According to this theory, all human languages share a common underlying structure, or "deep structure," which is based on a set of universal principles. These principles are innate and universal, meaning that they are present in all human languages and are not learned through exposure to language.

In addition to these universal principles, each language also has a set of parameters that are used to specify the particular characteristics of the language. These parameters are set in the early stages of language development, and they allow the child to learn the specific rules and conventions of the language they are exposed to.

The Principles and Parameters framework has been influential in the field of linguistics and has been widely adopted as a way of understanding how language is acquired and how it is represented in the mind.
